  1. Wheel Speed Sensors: Each wheel in a vehicle equipped with ESC has a dedicated speed sensor, typically based on a Hall effect sensor or magnetoresistive technology. These sensors contain permanent magnets that create a stable magnetic field, allowing the sensor to detect even minute changes in wheel rotation speed. Accurate wheel speed data is crucial, as ESC must detect any differences between wheels to adjust braking pressure accordingly.
  2. Steering Angle Sensors: The steering angle sensor, often found within the steering column, uses permanent magnets to monitor the driver’s steering input accurately. This sensor detects the angle and direction of steering and works alongside wheel speed sensors to inform the ESC system when and how to correct the vehicle’s trajectory.

  1. Temperature Stability: ESC sensors must perform consistently in fluctuating temperatures, from extreme heat to cold. Magnets like Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) are ideal for these conditions, as they maintain their magnetic field strength under extreme temperatures.
  2. High Magnetic Strength: ESC systems require high precision to detect small, rapid changes in wheel speed or steering angle. Neodymium magnets, known for their powerful magnetic fields, are commonly used in compact sensors where high sensitivity is critical.
  3. Durability and Corrosion Resistance: ESC components are often exposed to moisture, salt, and road debris. Using magnets with durable coatings or corrosion-resistant materials, such as epoxy-coated neodymium, helps ensure the sensors’ longevity and performance in harsh environments.

 

  • How ESC Uses Data from Magnetic Sensors
  1. Data Collection: Permanent magnets in the wheel speed and steering sensors generate signals as the wheels rotate or the steering angle changes. This data is relayed to the ESC control unit.
  2. Instant Analysis: The ESC unit compares data from all four wheels and the steering angle to determine if the vehicle’s path deviates from the intended direction.
  3. Corrective Action: If the ESC detects a skid or potential rollover, it applies individual brakes on specific wheels to adjust the vehicle’s course, helping the driver regain control.
